Well, compound all these frustrations with the fact that unskilled labor can often make more money than a college degree. I see examples of this day-to-day with people in my immediate social circles.

It is, naturally, the agenda of Fox News, et al, to malign the Occupy movement, and take away credibility from their position. But, the position is entirely valid: 1% of the population controls over 40% of the wealth. 1% of that group controls the bulk of that portion of wealth. This steep incline and disparity in economic brackets is really, really bad for our country, and the gap is widening at a frightening rate. I hesitate to speculate what things will be like if this trend continues for another 10 or 20 years.

Hi Scott,

Well, two things. Yes, there is a typo in there. And one unclear explanation. That was an accident.

However, I'm not going to fix it. In fact, it was a happy accident. You'll forgive me, but my financial information isn't very detailed on purpose. This is the internet and all, and I don't know that I want to break down my bank statement for anyone who can use google. Suffice to say, I'd call the debt most people graduate with "staggering."

I actually graduated with significantly more than 30k in student loans. I know very few people with that little, actually. The balances are painful to look at, especially if you have any private/non-Stafford school loans, which I do (Stafford has a limit on how much you can borrow, which is currently only 3k for incoming freshman).

It probably is worth it to a lot of people.

I personally, as painful as repayment can be...I don't know that I'd make another choice. I work for Good. I would have been unable to walk out of high school and work for Good. Good pays kind of mediocre, though. Evil has the better benefits. I accept mediocre pay in exchange for doing something worthwhile, but I don't accept being punished for being poor and wanting to do something worthwhile.

I know many many people will say "Oh my god, why don't you just go work for Evil?" but that's not a solution. You know, if everyone takes a position in weapons development, who is left to work on cancer research and clean air?

Not to contest anything else in this post, but I'm not understanding this statement:

"When people graduate with $30,000 in college loans, and pay $400 a month faithfully for 20 years (when $400 monthly would pay that debt in 7 years) and still have $20,000 left to pay, they are no longer paying for college."

Was there a typo here? If not, I don't understand the statement. Thanks.

What is sad is I know all of this, yet I just chose to start college myself. I am in a field where I will probably not make the money to pay back my loans before I die. Somehow, I still think it's worth it to do what I am aiming for.
